Garden Rules

Our new garden needs some ground rules. A lot of excitement and curiosity comes with the kids into this space. I wish there were enough flowers to pick whatever you like, to run, to dig, to scream and yell, but there isn’t enough space or freedom in a school environment. I am comforted knowing that time in these garden classes is still some of their best times even with the need to self-regulate and share. We decided together what the “rules” of our garden were going to be and then made a big sign with some leftover paint. All grades discussed, brainstormed, and voted. The older kids got to do the painting. The big sign is one of my favorite things about the garden.

Alden Alvarado

Alden helps with the school garden program at Lafayette Elementary in (sometimes) sunny West Seattle. She loves to help the kids get their hands on nature, from worm bins to hydroponic basil. When not at school she can be found in her own garden or exploring the coast with her family and lovable golden doodle.
